During this time of year, as the light fades and the darkness slowly takes its turn, I find myself turning inwards and changing focus. This is something I think humans feel innately regardless of their religion or creed. It is a time for reflection, family, and gratitude. People tell stories about loved ones who have passed on. We celebrate with food and drinks and cozy fires - hunkering down and embracing the slowing down of things. There are gifts, and songs, and traditions that go back generations. To me, it sometimes feels like every year around this time we remember what truly matters and are able to break free from the power of DOING and HUSTLING and CONSUMING.
One of my favorite things about the dark half of the year is that it begins with gratitude. Gratitude for healthy harvests in our life, both literally and metaphorically. We fall slowly into this season with celebrations for our loved ones who have passed on. We thank them for their guidance and their love, and offer them peace and remembrance, knowing they are always with us. We recall the advice they gave us, the funny stories they told, and the kind deeds they did while alive. We tell the generations who didn't know them all of these things and share how they are similar to each other in looks and actions.
In honor of our family members who have passed on, I wrote this simple blessing. We wrote it down on a piece of paper, the kiddos drew beautiful pictures all over it, and we burned it in our fire pit (then made s'mores because YUM).
🕯️ Sending gratitude and love to our ancestors and family members who have passed on and continue to provide guidance from beyond. Our doors and hearts are open to you - may you rest peacefully knowing that we haven’t forgotten you and carry you with us always.
Wishing you and yours a wonderful start to the season.
